What is Geocaching?

Geocaching is an anyday-anytime adventure that can take you to amazing and beautiful places or even to a place in your town that you´ve never been before. There are millions of geocaches worldwide. There are probably even some in your area right now. Just start finding them, just got out your phone or GPS. Them create a free geocaching account and you are ready to go.

The way it works is simple. Just choose the geocache you want to find, then navigate to its location.

What you are looking for varies. Geocaches are common in different sizes, shapes and difficulties. Geocaching isn´t always easy so it´s ok to get excited when you discover the cache. After finding it, sign the logbook, trade “nick-nacks” if you want and log your find online. When you´re done, just put the geocache back where you found it. And you are on to the next one.

There is an adventure happening all the time, all around you. Become a part of it at geocaching.com.

How it works:

What is Geocaching?

Lesson 1 – Trade items properly

Sometimes when you find a geocache, it will be filled with seeming random items. You don´t have to trade  but if you do, there are a few guide lines:

-  Trade equal or up

-  Everything should be legal and safe

-  Food an smelly items might attract animals, and animals don´t even know how to geocache.

Lesson 2 – Learn about trackables

Instead of being kept like trade-items, trackables move from geocache to geocache. They come in all shapes and sizes. They all have a unique tracking code and the words “trackable at geocaching.com”. Before you take one, make sure that you know what to do with it. And if you are not quite sure, leave it for the next geocacher. Even if it´s super cool looking.

Lesson 3 – Play it cool!

To the untrained eye geocaches and geocacher might look a little suspicious. While you are searching, keep an eye on curious. When people are near-by be as discreet as possible.

Lesson 4 – Respect the environment

Geocachers are known for being environmentally friendly. That means not tramping plants and animals and respect in natural areas. We even have a thing called “Cache in trash out” aka. CITO. It means whenever you are out geocaching track out any trash you see.

Lesson 5 – Use common sense

This one is easy. Just think before you geocache. Come prepared, abide local laws and keep yourself safe.
